4×4 101 & Helpful 4×4 Tips

  • 4×4 INFO: Driving on the beach is an adventure in itself that’s a lot of fun and easy to do. It’s also required for getting to Wild Horse as it is located at the 6.9 mile marker on the 4 x 4 beaches. We will be flying our pirate colors to identify our location as you drive down the beach but use your odometer as a gauge so you know when to start looking for us.
  • Is an SUV with All Wheel Drive (AWD) ok to use? The area does push for the use of four wheel drive vehicles but I am confident AWD is fine as long as the tire pressure is reduced to 15-18 psi as recommended. We saw several driving on the beach. The main issue is the clearance underneath the vehicle.
  • No SUV, No problem. If you don’t get a 4×4 or are not comfortable with driving on the beach it’s no problem. Sun to Thursday and Sat to Sunday we will coordinate your ride with an available SUV or 4×4 from us or someone headed your way. Please let us know if you will be parking and need a lift to Wild Horse in the RSVP or Contact Us (Under the Thanks Tab). We will coordinate a pick up time based on everyone’s arrival and location.
  • Air There is an air station just off the 4×4 beach at the Twiddy Rental office. It is free but requires a code to use that we will post on the website for everyone to use. The Twiddy office is located at 1142 Ocean Trail, Corolla, NC 27927.
  • 4×4 Rental If you plan to fly in it may be easiest to rent an SUV with four wheel drive as rental will get more expensive the closer you get to the 4×4 beaches of Corolla.
  • Local Jeep Rental from Enterprise in Manteo, NC (1 hr from Wild Horse)
  • Local Jeep Rental from Kill Devil Hills, NC (40 min to 1 hr from Wild Horse)
  • Satellite Parking Those without 4×4 or AWD SUV’s should plan to leave the car at the hotel or the Twiddy office parking lot located at 1142 Ocean Trail, Corolla, NC 27927. This includes those staying at Wildhorse with 2WD vehicles.
  • Wild Horse Parking Those staying and visiting at Wild Horse should drive around to the back of the house. Once you spot our flag look for the break in the dunes before or after Wild Horse as you drive up the beach and follow the tire tracks. If the back becomes full it is perfectly fine to park on the beach in front of Wild Horse. Just make sure you park well above the high tide line!
  • Corolla Shuttle 4×4 Shuttle to Wild Horse – $25 per person when shuttling from the Corolla area. Call in advance to schedule and check rates.
  • Wedding Day Shuttles to and from the event are being organized for transportation before and after the event for those with 2WD vehicles. Please comment in the RSVP or Contact Us areas to inform us of your anticipated arrival time so we can coordinate accordingly.
